Mark Conrad is a trial attorney and a founding partner of Conrad|Metlitzky|Kane. He specializes in complex civil litigation and has broad experience representing businesses and individuals at the trial and appellate levels in both state and federal courts. Mark’s litigation experience covers cases involving trade secrets, employment mobility, business torts, partnership disputes, copyright, trademark, contracts, constitutional law, civil rights, class actions, employment discrimination, and professional malpractice.

Prior to forming Conrad|Metlitzky|Kane, Mark served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of California. In that position, he served as lead trial or appellate counsel in dozens of civil matters, representing federal agencies and employees in litigation over constitutional, administrative, employment, tort, professional malpractice, statutory, and other civil claims. Mark also investigated cases of complex financial fraud. As a member of the Department of Justice’s Residential Mortgage Backed Securities (RMBS) Working Group, Mark was instrumental in the Department’s recovery of $2.6 billion in connection with the Government’s resolution of claims arising out of the 2008 financial crisis.

Previously, Mark practiced at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, where he litigated complex commercial disputes, including antitrust, trade secret, employment, copyright, contract, and other matters. His clients ranged from entrepreneurs and executives to start-ups and Fortune 100 companies such as Hewlett-Packard Company, Microsoft Corporation, and Abbott Laboratories.

Mark has been recognized for his work on significant pro bono matters. He represented same-sex couples in Strauss v. Horton, a California Supreme Court case challenging California’s Proposition 8. He also represented the plaintiffs in Martinez v. Astrue, a nationwide class action that settled for more than $500 million in relief for individuals whose benefits had been denied or terminated by the Social Security Administration. Mark has represented some of the most well-respected nonprofit organizations in California at both the trial and appellate levels, including Common Cause, Stanford Criminal Justice Center, Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom, San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, Los Angeles County Bar Association, California Women’s Law Center, and the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley. Mark currently serves on the State Bar of California’s Legal Services Trust Fund Commission, and he previously served as an Advisory Board member for OneJustice, a nonprofit dedicated to the delivery of legal services to indigent Californians.

Mark is a leader in the San Francisco legal community. He currently serves as a Lawyer Representative to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Justice and Diversity Center of the Bar Association of San Francisco. Mark previously served as the President of the Barristers Club of the Bar Association of San Francisco; as Vice President of the Northern District of California chapter of the Federal Bar Association; and as a member of the Edward J. McFetridge Inn of Court. Mark also volunteers as a mediator for the Alternative Dispute Resolution Program of the Northern District of California.

Mark attended Harvard Law School, graduating cum laude. During law school, he served as an Executive Editor of the Harvard Law Review and worked as an extern at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Mark earned his undergraduate degree summa cum laude from Princeton University, with concentrations in Politics and East Asian Studies. Mark lives in San Francisco with his wife and two children.
